Below is the general calendar of all activities connected to the Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership and the Montour Preserve's Environmental Education Center. Not all of these events are open to the public. Please scroll below the calendar for details on specific programs and events that you can get involved with, details and how to register.
1 p.m. Sunday, April 28th: WREN: Women Reconnecting and Engaging with Nature
This program aims to help women reconnect with and actively participate in the natural world. The primary goal is to foster a strong, supportive community among women, providing them with the skills and confidence needed for outdoor activities. The topics for April include fire starting, outdoor cooking and campsite selection and set up.

10 a.m. Tuesday, April 20th: Read and Explore- Bugs, Insects and More
On April 30th at 10 a.m., our Read and Explore program will meet outside at Heron Cove (weather permitting) to explore the hidden lives of bugs and insects. Meeting weekly, this early STEM and literacy program engages young children with hands on exploration and learning opportunities.

9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 4, 2024: Intro to Fly Fishing. Join PA Fish and Boat Commission staff and Fishing Skills Instructors (FSI) for this FREE program, designed to introduce you to the basics of fly fishing (e.g. gear, casting, on-water fly fishing experience)! Fly fishing gear and instruction is provided for the duration of the program at no cost to participants! Participants who register and attend the program, will receive a fly-fishing packet at the in-person portion of the program and additional fly fishing resources via email. Anyone, ages 12 years and older with an interest in learning the basics is welcome. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Spaces are limited and registration is required. 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024: Fossil Event with Central Pennsylvania Rock and Mineral Club
Dig, discover and learn on Saturday, May 18th during our fossil event at Montour Preserve, hosted by the Central PA Rock and Mineral Club with Andrew Rockhound.
Central Pennsylvania is renowned for its rich geological history, particularly in relation to the Devonian period. During the Devonian period, which occurred roughly 419-359 million years ago, much of what was now Pennsylvania was covered by shallow seas creating prime conditions for the formation of fossils.
