This week at Read and Explore, we will meet in the fossil pit at the request of some of our regular participants. This program appropriate for young children will include fossil basics, the geological timeline and of course time to dig for your own fossils. Please be sure to bring your own eye protection and digging tools. Montour preserves fossil pit is a unique feature that we are fortunate to have. The Montour Preserve Fossil Pit consists of approximately one acre of exposed Mahantango Formation shale. Formed some 395 million years ago during the Devonian Period when much of Pennsylvania was covered by a warm, shallow sea, these shales are particularly rich in fossils. The most commonly found fossils at this site are Pelecypods (oyster, mussel and clam-type species), Cephalopods, Brachiopods (lamp shells), Byrozoans (moss-like animals), Crinoids, Gastropods (snail-like creatures), Corals and Trilobites. Our Read and Explore program early literacy and STEM education program is excited to take advantage of the warmer weather and head outside to explore the fossil pit. As always, you get to keep any fossils you find! Please register below. The Vernal School offers free, high-quality programming at the Montour Preserve. Please consider donating to the Vernal School to help us continue our efforts.
