On March 24, 2024, the Wren Program held its first meeting. WREN stands for Women Reconnecting and Engaging with Nature. This program aims to help women reconnect with and actively participate in the natural world. The primary goal is to foster a strong, supportive community among women, providing them with the skills and confidence needed for outdoor activities. By sharing experiences and offering mutual support, the program seeks to build profound connections, empowering participants to confidently engage with nature. During their first meeting, participants shared their outdoor goals, learned day-hiking fundamentals, reviewed the principles of Leave No Trace, took part in a guided hike, and engaged in the reconstruction of a simple shelter. The program will be planned collectively by the group. Participants will determine the activities and skills they want to pursue next. Vernal School Program Supervisor Marissa Crames and ROAMBLER founder Katie Caputo will help facilitate the program. Once the group is confident in their skills, they plan to take quarterly family friendly trips to apply them in real-world situations. WREN's next meeting will be held 1 p.m. April 28th at the Goose Cove Pavillion 2 of Montour Preserve. The topics for that day include fire starting, outdoor cooking and campsite selection and set up.
