Vernal School partners with Susquehanna Council to offer ecology programs at Camp Karoondinha6/4/2025 The Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership is working with Scouting America’s Susquehanna Council this summer to support ecology programming at Camp Karoondinha, a 400-acre Scout camp along Penns Creek in Union County. The collaboration will provide Scouts attending summer sessions with hands-on learning opportunities in environmental science. Activities include guided hikes, aquatic studies and ecology-focused lessons tied to the camp’s natural features. Vernal School staff will plan and provide instruction for seven merit badges for the Scouts BSA sessions. These include environmental science, soil and water conservation, archeology, nature, reptile and amphibian study, insect study and mammal study. Age-appropriate elective programming for Cub Scouts will also be offered to support their advancement requirements.
“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Scouting America’s Susquehanna Council,” said Marissa Crames, program supervisor at the Vernal School. “Previous events we’ve worked on together have been very successful, and we’re excited to continue that collaboration by providing Scouts with quality resident camp programming.” Camp Karoondinha, operated by the Susquehanna Council, offers summer resident programs for both Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA. The camp’s varied landscape, including forests, streams and meadows, provides an ideal setting for outdoor learning. “We are glad to welcome the Vernal School to Camp Karoondinha this summer,” said Amanda Lebo, camp program director. “This partnership with our ecology program brings a hands-on approach to environmental education that encourages Scouts to connect with and care for the natural world around them.” Ecology programming supported by the Vernal School will be available throughout the camp’s summer sessions in June and July.
