On August 24th, 2024, Montour Preserve is set to host a free event for all youth who love being outside. "Outdoor STEM and Skills Day" will introduce children and teens to wilderness survival, local plant and animal species, basic map and compass work along with a variety of other outdoor STEM activities. "Outdoor STEM and Skills Day" is a collaborative initiative between the Vernal School, Montour Area Recreation Commission, Susquehanna Kids, Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and members of the Susquehanna Council BSA. This full day program aims to better prepare our community's youth for outdoor activities while introducing them to new STEM concepts and ideas. Activities designed for grades k-12 will vary according to age group and cover a series of topics. Participants will be rotate through the stations with others their age to ensure they all have the best experience possible. Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership and Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association will provide a series of fun, hands-on, and educational outdoor STEM activities aimed at fostering engagement with nature, environmental awareness, and conservation efforts among participants. Covering a variety of outdoor skills and experiences, youth and adult members of Susquehanna Council BSA, will be on hand to teach proven wilderness skills and methods designed for youth to understand. Any registered BSA youth members or units that attend will have the opportunity to fill multiple merit badge partials and Cub Scout advancement electives with approved counselors. Participants should bring a full water bottle, pack lunch and be prepared to get dirty. All participants will receive a free patch for attending.
