May Brings Field Trips and More to Montour Preserve

May is going to be an exciting month for the Vernal School.  This month is bustling with a series of scheduled field trips from many different districts, our ongoing regular programs, a full Intro to Fly Fishing class, and a fossil event that has reached its full capacity. We are happy to say that it's become a time of non-stop activity for the Vernal School and Montour Preserve.

We are excited to see how many school districts have scheduled trips this spring.  For many young students, these trips often serve as an introduction to concepts such as biodiversity, ecology, and conservation. Engaging in hands-on activities help students gain a deeper appreciation for nature and learning, while having fun.  The activities and stations for our guided field trips are designed to ignite curiosity and nurture a love for learning and the natural world.

On Friday, May 3rd, students from both the East Lycoming and Montoursville School Districts visited the preserve. They participated in various activities, including fossil digs, pond exploration and study, guided nature hikes, and more.  The excitement was contagious with more than 100 students visiting the preserve.  The normal subdued and quiet Environmental Education and Visitor Center was alive with chatter.
Often, when we mention working at Montour Preserve during a conversation, adults respond with fond recollections of their childhood field trips or family reunions.  Telling us how much they looked forward to a day in the fossil pit or fishing in Lake Chillisquaque.   We hope that one day, when these children are adults, they are able to look back with the same fond memories.
We would also like to thank our partners which help us to continue to offer high quality programming and volunteer to make sure the Vernal School is a success.  Without their help, opportunities like this would not be possible.

If you would like to schedule a field trip or group programming, please contact Marissa Crames by emailing [email protected] or call (570)850-1166
