Winter is a magical season that invites us to slow down, observe, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world in a quieter, more reflective state. January’s "Read and Explore" theme celebrates winter with a focus on its unique characteristics and how wildlife adapts to the colder months. This program is designed for preschoolers and their families. This January, our Early STEM and Literacy program, Read and Explore program offers a series of engaging activities centered around the themes of snow, winter wildlife, and hibernation. Each week, we’ll pair storytelling with exploration and hands-on learning, celebrating the magic of winter and its fascinating science.
Weekly books include: January 7: The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder We begin the month with The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter’s Wonder by Mark Cassino and Jon Nelson. This beautifully illustrated book introduces the fascinating science behind snowflakes, explaining how they form, their unique structures, and the conditions needed for their creation. January 14: Winter Walk This week features Winter Walk by Virginia Brimball Snow, a beautifully illustrated book that invites readers to discover the wonders of winter nature. We will then move outside and enjoy our own winter walk. January 21: Winter Sleep: The Story of Hibernation Dive into the world of hibernation with Winter Sleep: A Hibernation Story by Sean Taylor and Alex Morss, which explains how animals prepare for and survive winter. January 28: Over and Under the Snow We close the month with Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner, a lyrical story exploring the hidden world beneath the snow.
