The Vernal School is excited to host "Into the Woods We Go" at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025. This program is designed to teach young elementary and preschool aged children (and their families) outdoor basics and hiking essentials. Led by Vernal School Program Supervisor Marissa Crames, a certified Leave No Trace trainer, this program emphasizes fundamental hiking knowledge, safety precautions and environmental stewardship. The program is designed to be interactive and engaging, ensuring that young participants grasp essential hiking skills while having fun. Activities are geared towards the younger age groups, making learning accessible and enjoyable for preschoolers and early elementary students alike. Children will learn the fundamentals of hiking, including proper footwear, clothing, and hiking essentials. This program will introduce participants to the seven Leave No Trace principles in an age-appropriate manner, including disposing of waste properly, respecting wildlife, and leaving what they find. Hands-on activities will reinforce these lessons and interactive storytelling. Additional topics include and introduction to simple navigation skills such as recognizing trail markers and what to do if they get lost. A short, guided hike will allow children to practice these skills in a safe and supportive environment. This program will meet in the visitor's center of Montour Preserve. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Vernal School's Program Supervisor Marissa Crames by emailing [email protected] or calling (570) 850-1166
