Central PA naturalist, author Marcia Bonta to share about her book in program at Montour Preserve12/12/2023 The Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership will host a book discussion of "Appalachian Winter" with local author and renowned naturalist Marcia Bonta on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, starting at 7 p.m. at the Montour Preserve with both an in-person option and a Zoom component. Bonta is a 1962 Bucknell University graduate who has gone on to write nine books and more than 300 magazine articles, including the popular "Naturalist's Eye" column in the Pennsylvania Game News, a publication by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The description of "Appalachian Winter" on its Amazon selling page: Winter is the season that most tests our mettle. The psychological burdens of waiting for spring under gray skies compound the challenges of freezing rain, wind chill, deep snow, and dangerous ice. Despite winter’s harshness, there is plenty of beauty and life in the woods if only we know where to look. The stark, white landscape sparkles in the sunshine and glows beneath the moon on crisp, clear nights; bare branches make it easy to see long distances; birds flock to feeders; and animals—even those that should be hibernating—make surprise visits from time to time. Appalachian Winter offers acclaimed naturalist Marcia Bonta’s account of one season as experienced on and around her 650-acre home on the westernmost ridge of the hill-and-valley landscape that dominates central Pennsylvania. Bonta, who lives in Tyrone, will participate via Zoom. She will discuss her book and some of her background in writing it, the last of the four seasonal Appalachian book series.
