The Vernal School has some very exciting news — Montour Preserve's resident eagles are nesting and breeding. We will be documenting the progress of the nest regularly, so our Eagles need names, and we are asking the public to help us name them. Bald eagles, once an endangered species, have made an inspiring recovery in Pennsylvania and across the country. Having a nesting pair at Montour Preserve is not only an incredible sight for visitors, but also a sign of a thriving local ecosystem. With a bit of luck and privacy, we hope this pair will successfully raise chicks in the coming months.
To celebrate and engage the community, the Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership is hosting a naming contest — and we want YOU to help name our resident eagles! How to Enter the Naming Contest: Visit our Facebook page Go to the Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership's Facebook page by clicking here and find the official post about the eagle naming contest. Name Submissions must be posted on the original post by 11:59 P.M. on April 14, 2025. We will then create a post for the public to vote for their favorite on April 15th. The names with the most votes will win. Winning names will be announced on Earth Day- April 22, 2025. We’re looking forward to seeing your creative suggestions — and don’t forget to stop by the preserve for a chance to spot them soaring high above Lake Chillisquaque.
