At 2 p.m. Saturday November 16, 2024, Robyn Crouthamel a wildlife disease technician with the Pennsylvania Game Commission will be presenting a family friendly, educational program in the auditorium of Montour Preserve's Environmental Education Center discussing local bat species and the conservation efforts protecting them. "Bats in PA" will highlight our states native bat species and the importance of conserving Pennsylvania’s native bats. This program will focus on primarily on local bat species, but also touch upon bats around the world and their effect on the ecosystem. Attendees will learn about the state's efforts in conserving and monitoring bat species while faced with the devastating effects of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease severely impacting bat populations. Other topics include the ecological importance of bats, particularly their role in controlling insect populations and maintaining balanced ecosystems. Participants will gain insight into the vital services bats provide and why protecting them is crucial for environmental health. Additionally, the presentation will focus on specific conservation efforts happening at the Montour Preserve. It will highlight ongoing work to protect local bats and foster public awareness about their significance, while offering practical ways for individuals and families to contribute to the conservation of these important species.
