 Thirteen students ages 7-12 participated in the July 13 Camp Chillisquaque day camp program at the Montour Preserve.
Participants got to learn about endangered and threatened species and how to advocate for those that are more vulnerable and lack a voice. They also got to assess the Chillisquaque Creek using tools from MWEE kits connected to the DegenSTEAM initiative across the region.

 Thirteen additional young people, ages 7-12, participated in the July 10 Camp Chillisquaque day camp at the Montour Preserve and learned about endangered and threatened species in Pennsylvania, how to assess habitat and received a special presentation on beavers by Susquehanna University's Ann Czeponis before working on advocacy projects for species they felt moved to protect.
The day began with a fun game for everyone to get to know each other before participants learned from intern Maggie Yonkin all about each of the state's endangered and threatened species. It is run by the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association's Vernal School partnership.
Participants learned about each of Pennsylvania's threatened and endangered species and what they can do to help advocate for them. They also learned about habitats and did some assessments on one of the preserve's aquatic habitats (Chillisquaque Creek) with sampling for pH, temperature and macroinvertebrate density ... all made possible thanks to support from the DegenSTEAM lending lab MWEE kits. The day's special speaker was PA Game Commission educator Kelly Pollock, who shared a program on bats that included "building" a bat, a few bat-related games to illustrate some of the issues migrating bats experience and an overview presentation with numerous specimens.  Twelve students between the ages of 7-12 participated in the July 8, 2026, Camp Chillisquaque day camp at the Montour Preserve.
Students learned about endangered and threatened species, did habitat assessments and studies, engaged with a special speaker with game, craft and info and worked on advocacy for species they felt deserved a bigger voice. The programming included assessing the Middle Branch of the Chillisquaque Creek using sampling equipment provided in partnership with DegenSTEAM. This included measuring pH and temperature, doing macroinvertebrate studies and general sense reviews. |
