On March 24, 2024, the Wren Program held its first meeting. WREN stands for Women Reconnecting and Engaging with Nature. This program aims to help women reconnect with and actively participate in the natural world. The primary goal is to foster a strong, supportive community among women, providing them with the skills and confidence needed for outdoor activities. By sharing experiences and offering mutual support, the program seeks to build profound connections, empowering participants to confidently engage with nature.

This week, in our Read and Explore program, we'll dive into the fascinating world of animal tracks and the creatures that create them.
As always, our Read and Explore program includes a reading, simple craft and outdoor exploration. To celebrate the arrival of Spring, we will learn all about seeds during our March 26th Read and Explore program.
This week we will read "All About Seeds", then use all our senses to explore and learn. We will have fun planting our own seeds to take home and go on an adventure to find what seeds we can in the forest. *WE HAVE REACHED CAPACITY FOR THIS EVENT AND HAVE CLOSED ONLINE REGISTRATION* PLEASE EMAIL [email protected] IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
Dig, discover and learn on Saturday, May 18th during our fossil event at Montour Preserve, hosted by the Central PA Rock and Mineral Club. Central Pennsylvania is renowned for its rich geological history, particularly in relation to the Devonian period. During the Devonian period, which occurred roughly 419-359 million years ago, much of what was now Pennsylvania was covered by shallow seas creating prime conditions for the formation of fossils. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, at the Montour Preserve, join author Cindy Ross from Schuylkill County for a special discussion about the therapeutic power of hiking and outdoor experiences in general as referenced in her book "Walking Toward Peace: Veterans Healing On America's Trails."
The presentation will include a special 13-minute film overview of one veteran's story of recovery on the trail, Cindy's personal experiences of interacting with various veterans that are in the book and a question and answer discussion of the healing power of hiking and the outdoors. Afterward, a short hike will be offered at the Montour Preserve for those who would like to participate. "Read and Explore" is a weekly early literacy and nature-based program ideal for young children and their families. We meet every Tuesday, 10 a.m. at the Environmental Education Center at Montour Preserve.
At many Vernal School programs, women have often mentioned how much they would love to participate in more outdoor recreation, but do not have the skills or ability. Overcoming these barriers is why we have decided to create “Women Re-Connecting and Engaging with Nature Program”, or as we refer to it the “WREN” program.
A collaboration between Vernal School Program Supervisor Marissa Crames and ROAMBLER founder Katie Caputo, this program, led by women, will teach women and girls the skills they need to enjoy nature and the outdoors. We seek to offer a comfortable setting where participants are open to asking questions and learning new skills without any concerns. |
